Wedding photography packages once had a social value, that is, they were a visual testimony of the fact that marriage had been celebrated. As a result, they were static photos, didactic, cutlery.
Today, the 'social' function of photos of a wedding is largely done by the 'pictures' made with the smartphones of the guests. It's not so much a matter of photo quality, rather than the fact that they are performing the task of formalizing what it was and telling it to the four winds. Before the end of the day, photos spin around the globe on social issues, and everyone knows that the couple is wedged to the wedding, happily or not. In this context, the 'official' photographer is required to go beyond the didactic photo, posing, precarious. Because of that kind of photo, there is no need anymore. Among other things, photographing a documentary wedding also means trying to be the least obnoxious possible for the bride and groom. On the contrary, the more you go unnoticed, the better is because you can work close to your subjects. And the emotions, to have a graphic impact on the picture, must be taken up close. If your pictures are not good enough, you're not close enough. Wide angles, staying in action and using the available light. This is at least the basic recipe for best wedding photographers. And this recipe requires compact, fast-to-use, handy gear that does not go too far in the eye. The choice of equipment is therefore to find the right compromise between this type of requirements (compactness, weight, handling, discretion) and quality requirements of the finished product. Self-focus is reliable and fast enough for both dead and moving subjects, speeds of execution, robustness, and availability of a wide range of optics. Until very recently, using a full frame reflex was virtually mandatory. Too much limiting the use of different cameras, whether for image quality limits (especially high ISO), whether for slowness or autofocus or because of the non-maturity of alternative systems. Working for marriage means dealing with emotions, those of the spouses in the first place, but also those of the guests, of the closest friends, of the relatives. Moments of excitement, moments of joy, are all aspects that must be captured in the expressions of the protagonists and that is the task of the photographer. That's why it's important to concentrate and not go wrong. In creative wedding photography, the number of shots you make will not be as significant as the way you approach the service. In the album of their marriage, the wives want to retrieve all the sensations they have experienced on the day of marriage and to immortalize all these precious moments you must be invisible, confuse the crowd and let each one express themselves naturally without being conditioned by your presence. Do not forget that you have a great responsibility and the spouses have entrusted you with what will be one of the few tangible things that will remain of them that day: the wedding album.
